Version 1.1 — Effective date: 24 February 2026
PlatePatrol is a mobile application developed by Exact IOT Ltd ("we", "us", "our"), based in Auckland, New Zealand. The app helps users identify potentially stolen vehicles using Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology.
We are committed to protecting your privacy and handling personal information in accordance with the New Zealand Privacy Act 2020. This policy explains what data the app collects, how it is used, and how it is protected.
The app uses your device camera to capture images of vehicle number plates for real-time recognition. Camera access is used solely for number plate detection and is never used for facial recognition or recording of individuals.
Recognised number plates are compared against a publicly available stolen vehicle list published by the New Zealand Police. This comparison happens entirely on your device.
When a potential match is detected, the app records your device's GPS coordinates to assist CPNZ in reporting the sighting location to the appropriate authorities.
We may collect basic device information (device model, operating system version) for crash reporting and app stability purposes via Sentry, our error monitoring service.
When you subscribe to PlatePatrol Pro, Google Play processes your payment and manages your subscription. We do not directly collect or store your payment details (credit card number, billing address, etc.). Google Play provides us with your subscription status (active, expired, or cancelled) so the app can enable or disable premium features.
| Data Type | Retention |
|---|---|
| Non-matched number plates | Not stored; held in device memory during the session only and discarded automatically |
| Camera images (no match) | Not stored; processed in real-time and discarded immediately |
| Matched detections (plate, photo, location) | Stored on device until the user clears app data or uninstalls the app |
| Stolen vehicle watchlist | Stored on device; updated periodically from the public NZ Police list |
| Crash reports | Retained by Sentry for up to 90 days |
All number plate data and detection records are stored locally on your device. The app does not upload number plate data, detection images, or location data to any external server or cloud service.
Crash reports sent to Sentry contain only technical diagnostic information (error type, stack trace, device model, OS version) and do not include number plate data, images, or location information.
We do not sell, trade, or share your personal information with any third parties.
